Playing Since 1986
At the young age of four, Carrie began studying the violin under the tutelage of Ulli Reiner, a well-known Suzuki instructor in San Diego, CA. She continued violin when her family moved to Chicago and began lessons with Drostan Hall, who studied under the famous Vermeer Quartet of Chicago.
Under Mr. Hall, of the Hall School of Music and Camarata Chicago, Carrie seized the opportunity to participate in Master Classes with David Taylor (co-concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and Dr. Zinger (DePaul University).
While in high school, she started a private string studio during the summers. She tutored basic-to-intermediate violin for students ages four to thirteen.
Degree in Music Education & Continued Teaching
Carrie graduated with Honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Music Education (K-12) in May 2004.
At U of I, she participated in both symphonies and served as the Concertmaster of the Illini Symphony. She played in chamber groups and took lessons from famous German violinist Peter Schaffer. Carrie student taught in Champaign Unit #4 school district in the spring of 2004. Each day she worked with elementary, middle, and high school string orchestras with Dr. Rodney Mueller.
After graduating with her Bachelor's and an Illinois teaching certificate, Carrie and her husband and moved to Austin, TX, to begin their careers. Carrie was given the opportunity to instruct strings as the Orchestra Director at Lamar Middle School, Jefferson Elementary, Garcia Elementary, and Meredith-Dunbar Elementary in Temple ISD. In January 2005, Carrie established her private string studio in Round Rock, TX, and served the community as a violin instructor.
Private String Studio
Carrie maintained a year-round, large private string studio of 30+ students of all ages at Blackerby Violin Shop, Sam Bass Music, Round Rock ISD, and Georgetown ISD middle school orchestra programs. She's thankful for her extensive education and diverse string background that allow her to teach so many different students.
Carrie served as the Assistant Concertmaster for the Austin Civic Orchestra and a 1st Violinist for the Round Rock Symphony. She served on the Board of Directors for the Austin Pops and played as a 1st Violinist in the performing group.
Her other performance experiences include Divisi String quartets, The Austin Lyric Opera, and various rock & classical gigs. Her favorite performances include accompanying the Three Irish Tenors in a Christmas concert, playing with a Beatles' cover band, and performing with the Austin Lyric Opera for their debut of Carmen.
In 2012, Carrie settled in San Diego, her hometown, where she now resides with her husband and two children. She has a private violin studio in Point Loma where she continues to enjoy helping students make progress with their instrument.
